Dr. Kombola Mussa
Teaching Black Italy, the course created and led by Fred Kuwornu, without any doubt offers to its participants the best and most complete opportunity to learn about Black Italy and Black Italians. The course provides essential knowledge of the life and presence of Black people in Italy; but it also enables attendees to develop a deep understanding of the Italian social context and its widespread racism. It does so by giving voice to Black activists, writers, journalists, trade union representatives and artists. The opportunity to hear the stories of Kuwornu’s guests and to discuss with them is one of the most stimulating parts of the course. It has both an educational and a political value.
As a Black researcher, I must also add that by the end of course I (finally) felt that I was not alone. This experience was deeply empowering.
