Dr. Luisanna Sardu
"Fred Kuwornu’s workshop “teaching black Italy” is a must for all those instructors and scholars of Italian Studies who aim to shed light on the ever-changing social fabric of Italy and Europe at large. The guest speakers and the material shared with the attendee were refreshing and at times illuminating. The opportunity to listen to the experience of Black people in Italy, and to study and discuss the history, politics, and geography of their personal journey, has propelled the creation of different syllabi for my Italian Studies program at Manhattan College. As a Latino woman who grew up in Italy and as a professor of Italian Studies, I would recommend this workshop to anyone who is grappling with the meaning of diversity in Italian culture in comparison with diversity in the United States, and to those who wish to reframe their Italian course to be more inclusive and diverse."
